Tons of Fun in Bennington

Alexandra Inn Bed & Breakfast

916 Orchard Rd // Bennington, VT
(888) 207-9386 // alexandrainn.com

Distance from White Plains: 3 hours, 15 minutes

From the white wooden eaves, to the picturesque dormer windows, to the tree-lined property, the Alexandra Inn Bed & Breakfast is the picture of Vermont hospitality. But don’t be put off by the words “Bed & Breakfast”—you won’t find any country-curtain-patterned wallpaper here. This beautiful former farmhouse has been updated with modern conveniences and elegant interior design. The well-appointed rooms feature flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, and free Wi-Fi. Guests should stroll the gardens and enjoy the views of nearby Mount Anthony. Situated just a few miles outside of downtown Bennington, the Alexandra Inn has the feel of a secluded country home but is within easy driving distance of numerous restaurants and local attractions. It even has a private restaurant only for guests, where you can have a candlelit, locally sourced meal for two. Reserve a table early, however, as they only serve four parties per night with a prix-fixe, single-option dinner that changes daily.

Fall is the best time of year to visit Vermont, as the trees alone offer a spectacular show. If you want to learn more about the foliage, visit the New England Tropical Conservatory, a nearly 100-acre preserve that offers great hiking trails and classes about the New England ecosystem. While you’re driving, be sure to check out at least one of the local historic covered bridges. There are five total—and for the real history buff, there’s even a Covered Bridge Museum inside the Bennington Center for the Arts (802-442-7158, benningtoncenterforthearts.org). If you’re looking for a cultural evening, check out Bennington College. Famed for its dance program (begun by Martha Graham), it often hosts interesting events and readings that are open to the public. If you’re in Bennington proper and you’re looking for a great spot to eat, try Pangea Restaurant (802-442-7171), a global eatery that also has a relaxed lounge stocked with beers from around the world.
