Distance from White Plains: 3 hours, 45 minutes

Offering astounding pond and ocean views from its wraparound porches and expansive lawn, The Stone House sits way off the beaten path in a rural farming community. The antithesis of its see-and-be-seen neighbor, Newport, sleepy Little Compton offers the simple pleasures of unspoiled vistas, undisturbed beaches, and, today, this special destination from which to experience them. Following a meticulous, two-year renovation, The Stone House launched as a luxurious seaside inn in 2009. Built in 1854 as a private vacation home, the property’s centerpiece is its Italianate-style, eponymous stone manse. Only 13 individually designed guest quarters—nine in the main building and four in the adjacent Wood Barn—are offered, and, while each boasts a marble bathroom and deep soaking tub, features vary to include private porches, patios, gas fireplace, gardens, and entrances, etc. Unlike its historic exteriors, the interior is sleek and modern.

The inn’s spa offers excellent services, and a pair of unspoiled beaches—one rocky, one sandy—are situated a short walk away. Accessible only by foot, you may well have them all to yourself (the inn provides towels and chairs). Or browse the quaint shops and galleries in the tiny nearby village of Tiverton, hunt for antiques in Bristol, or sip wines at Westport River Vineyard & Winery. Back at the inn, refuel with modern comfort-food fare—smoked pulled pork with maple barbecue sauce on a brioche bun, burgers with blue-cheese mayo, lobster rolls—at the inn’s 1854 Taproom, a rustic, tavern-style eatery rumored to have been a Prohibition-era speakeasy.
