R5 Emergency Treatments

emergency: PIMPLE
“If it’s not too bad, try plain old calamine lotion or Clinique’s Acne Solutions Spot Healing Gel,” says Dr. Brent Wainwright, a board-certified dermatologist with a practice in Cross River. “Otherwise your dermatologist can inject a steroid directly into the pimple. Within a couple of hours, you’ll see a reduction in the redness and elevation of the pimple.”

emergency: COLD SORE
Make sure you have an antiviral medication, such as Valtrex, on hand to take at the first tingle of an onset to prevent the sore from erupting.

emergency: SKIN RASH
Stress can cause rashes to pop up. Your best defense, says Dr. Michael Wald, supervisor of nutritional services at Integrated Medicine & Nutrition in Mount Kisco, “Drink plenty of water and take a multivitamin to help manage the effects of stress. Eliminate all refined and processed carbohydrates. Increase your fruit and vegetable intake to help clear your system of unwanted toxins that may have caused or worsened a skin rash. Since skin rashes are inflammation and omega-three fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, increase your intake of salmon, mackerel, or swordfish, or take an omega-three fatty-acids capsule a few times per day.”

emergency: YOUR PERIOD
Plan far enough in advance and beat Mother Nature, says Dr. Lisa Roth-Brown, an OB/GYN with Westchester Health in Mount Kisco. “If you’re already on birth-control pills, talk to your doctor a couple of months in advance about adjusting your cycle so you finish your period the week before the wedding. If not on the pill, start taking the pill at least three months ahead of your wedding date to allow your body to get used to the medication to avoid problems like breakthrough bleeding.”
