Might want to double up on those water filters!
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is suing Chappaqua Septic—a septic tank and cesspool waste service company—for illegally dumping waste into a stream in New Castle. That stream, which flows into the New Croton Reservoir, accounts for 10 percent of New York City’s “East-of-Hudson” drinking water system. Tests confirmed that in addition to raw sewage and septic waste, the stream was, as a result, contaminated with high levels of bacteria associated with human waste.
The penalty? The lawsuit filed by Cuomo in the State Supreme Court in Westchester, seeks $100,000 for violation of New York’s clean water laws, up to $11,250 for violating the state-issued permit for waste disposal, and also the total cost of the investigation and cleanup of the pollution.
