Scott Vaccaro—the mac daddy of all Hudson River Valley brewers—opened Captain Lawrence in 2006 when he was just 27 years old. The timing was critical. It’s hard to remember now, but, in 2006, most of the newsy microbrewing was happening either in Europe or on the West Coast. Captain Lawrence was one of the first local, craft microbrewers to hit the New York City market. Given a dearth of quality competitors, Captain Lawrence was quickly championed by New York’s elite locavorian restaurants including Blue Hill New York in Manhattan, Blue Hill at Stone Barns, and all of Danny Meyer’s restaurants (Blue Smoke, Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, etc.). Vaccaro still brews thought-provoking, one-off experiments that, when released, are in such demand that their allocation must be managed with a ticketing system (just like a rock show). Speaking of rock shows, Captain Lawrence  hosts concerts. Plus, look for an outdoor beer garden that offers cornhole, bocce, and visits from Village Dog and The Cookery’s DoughNation pizza truck.
