R5 Best Eating and Drinking Experiences In Westchester: Bites and Sips

47 Churros at El Trigal
Walk past the small convenience store in front and grab a round tray and tongs. What lies beyond in the loaded bakers’ racks is the stuff of Augustus Gloop fantasies. There is a lot to tweeze onto your personal tray, but our favorites are the crisp (yet chewy) wands of extruded, deep-fried churros—best when El Trigal’s exterior sign indicates when they’re hot.

48 Coffee at Coffee Labs Roasters
Westchester’s hippest little coffee roaster’s beans are “grown globally [and] roasted locally.” Look for live music in addition to great brews.

49 Coffee at Polpettina
If you’re an aspiring hipster, you can’t do any better than to source your caffeine at Polpettina. This joe is made with the newly trendy, old-fashioned-seeming pour-over method—plus it’s organic Blue Bottle Coffee, proudly “micro-roasted” in Brooklyn.

50 Little Kabab Station’s Frankie Rolls
These spicy, filling snacks are based on griddled roti bread, which is rolled around chili-spiked meat or cheese filling topped with chutney (and, if you like, a fried egg). Take our word for it: You like the egg.

51 Beer at DeCicco’s Market
Look for Ardsley’s six-tap growler fill station and Brewster’s full-on bar so that you can actually take The Clash’s advice and get lost in the supermarket, beer in hand—as long as it’s a DeCicco’s.

52 Lubins-N-Links
Deliciously greasy hot dogs with loads of toppings—like the Spicy Loaded Link: a hot dog topped with cheese sauce, chili, onions, spicy kraut, and hot cherry peppers. Oh, and why not put some bacon on it, too?

53 Tacos at Tacos El Poblano
The ultimate in great, cheap Westchester eats, this modest taqueria slings lemony al árabes and massive pambasos, head-sized tortas in mole sauce.  The great news is that you’ll be stuffed beyond belief and still walk away with change to re-stoke the parking meter.

54 Paletas at Paleteria Fernandez
Arrayed like jewels in the case, these pretty ice pops offer a world of exotic fruits in a sweet, sugary package. They’re the perfect, not-too-guilty, guilty pleasure.

55 Pupusas at La Pupusa Loco
Hot, cheap Salvadoran street food doesn’t get any better than these addictively salty, greasy griddled corn cakes filled with spicy pork, cheese, or beans. Grab a few and eat them in the car with an ample dollop of curtido (spicy slaw)—it’s an insanely delicious solo splurge.

56 Wedges at Dantes
Supposedly, we in Westchester are the only people on the planet who refer to those over-loaded, whole-loaf sandwiches as “wedges.” Be proud of your wedges, Westchester—and demand the best. You can’t get any better than those at Dantes Gourmet Deli Italian Specialties, proudly serving wedges for two generations.

57 Falafel at Taiim Falafel Shack
Nutty and well spiced, sprightly with pickle and drippy with tahini sauce, this best-case falafel is crunchy, creamy, and delicious. Don’t miss the hummus, either.

58 Juice at Jolo’s Kitchen
As the saying goes, Ital is vital! Ital, the vegetarian diet espoused by Rastafarians, never tasted better than at this small New Rochelle health food restaurant that does a mean trade in juices. Our favorite refresher is Jolo’s lemony/gingery kale juice that feels like a week in a spa (in a cup).

59 Lassi at Little Spice Bazaar
Do you remember on The Sopranos when Paulie Walnuts called a Starbucks-like coffee chain a “rape of the culture”? The same could be said of Pinkberry, which took India’s idea of tangy, tart yogurt mixed with fruit and gave it a soundtrack.Try the healthy Indian original in this sweet little yogurt shop, and linger for street snacks of crisp chaat layered with cilantro and pulses.
