With close to 40 years of experience in the photographic industry, including the last 18 as a co-manager of Arista Camera & Imaging in Bronxville, Chappaqua resident Andre Adelson is a veritable camera connoisseur. Here, his top five cameras.

1) PowerShot A1300 (Canon) $119.99 Adelson describes this compact camera’s optical viewfinder as “a boon for all those beginners who can’t seem to get the hang of using the LCD screen for aiming and composing, especially in bright daylight conditions.” Add in the convenience of being powered by AA batteries, a 16-megapixel sensor, and a 5x optical zoom, and, he says, you’ll have great pictures at a great price. |

2) PowerShot ELPH 110HS (Canon) $249.99 “This camera is perfect for taking shots at parties or at a night out,” says Adelson. “It fits neatly in a pocket and, when you’re ready, its wide, 5-to-1 optical zoom allows the photographer to fit everybody into the picture while staying in effective flash range.” The 16-megapixel sensor, combined with Canon’s excellent optics, delivers fabulous results, he says. |
3) COOLPIX L810 (Nikon) $279.99 If you’re shooting lots of photos of school concerts and Little League games, Adelson says that this is the camera for you. Nikon’s “bridge” camera features a 16-megapixel sensor and a 26x optical zoom. Add in HD video with sound and power supplied by AA batteries, and Adelson promises that you’ll be pretty much set for any America’s Got Talent-worthy solos or pro-ball-quality pitches. |

4. COOLPIX AW100 (Nikon) $349.95 For the active photographer, here’s a camera that is waterproof—down to 33 feet. For the clumsy photographer, it’s a camera that is shockproof. “A 16-megapixel sensor coupled with a 5x optical zoom, plus 1080p HD video with sound, help round out this sturdy package,” says Adelson. |

5. D3200 Digital SLR Kit (Nikon) $699.99 “For the serious or aspiring photographer,” says Adelson, “this brand-new beauty is now the entry point of choice into a ‘system camera’ for those looking for Nikon excellence.” Featuring a 24-megapixel sensor and full 1080p HD video with sound capacity, its effective range of ASA settings up to 6400 allows for awesome results in available low-light scenarios, he adds. Compatible with Nikon’s line of AF-S NIKKOR lenses and external flashes, it comes with an 18-55 mm lens to start off. |
