R5 Admiral’s Landing: A Quixotic Provincetown Getaway

While staying at one of the myriad B&Bs sprinkled throughout Provincetown is a quintessential part of the P-Town experience, none offer the combination of charm, amenities, hospitality, location, peacefulness, private baths, and off-street parking (two much-appreciated rarities in this neck of the woods!) that  Admiral’s Landing does.

Located on Bradford Street by the intersection with Pearl Street, just one block from Commercial Street and the waterfront, Admiral’s Landing places you at the literal crossroads of P-Town’s fall-friendly offerings, with dining and shopping to the west and the gallery district and other cultural points of interest to the east.

Robyn and Audri Bazlen-Weglarz purchased the inn from its previous owners in 2010, and immediately started giving it the love it had been sorely lacking. The couple swiftly overhauled the inn from top to bottom—quite literally—replacing the foundation of the Greek Revival building, expanding its guest lounge and breakfast area (adding a library with fireplace), renovating its six rooms and two efficiencies in iconic Cape yellows and blues and redecorating them with paintings from local artists, and adding welcome tech touches, like free WiFi, alarm-clock radios with iPod docks, refrigerators, and gas fireplaces operated by the touch of a button—making the Admiral’s Landing an especially attractive home base for fall excursions to the Cape.

Lodging includes a fresh assortment of the usual continental breakfast fare, supplemented by Robyn’s baked confections (the weekend we stayed, we were treated to her cranberry-walnut coffee cake) and daily iterations of her “Admiral’s Cup,” a muffin-shaped quiche. Ever the attentive but unobtrusive hosts, Robyn and Audrey engage their guests in conversation around the breakfast table each morning. A Keurig machine is available in the breakfast room around the clock for your caffeine or hot beverage fix (along with fresh fruit and ice), while a private courtyard behind the main building features a hot tub and a barbecue grill. Most rooms feature queen-size beds and wall-mounted flatscreen TVs.

Dine: A short walk to Commercial Street puts you on the path to the town’s dining scene. Among the standouts is Fanizzi’s (fanizzisrestaurant.com). A favorite among locals and vacationers alike, Fanizzi’s offers a locally sourced seafood menu, breathtaking views of Provincetown Bay (the restaurant is nestled on a pier), and a very popular Sunday Brunch buffet. Next door to the Admiral’s Landing, Far Land Provisions (farlandprovisions.com) is an eat-in/take-out deli and gourmet market that offers sandwiches, wraps, other prepared foods (many made with organic, locally sourced ingredients), even wine, if you’d rather take a meal back to your room or pack a picnic lunch for a scenic outing on the Cape.

Explore: Contrary to popular belief, autumn is not too late to enjoy a whale-watching cruise. Dolphin Fleet (whalewatch.com) offers the definitive whale-watching excursions, with a naturalist onboard each trip to explain whale and dolphin behavior in detail. Those seeking a more active outing can avail themselves of the Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT; capecodbikeguide.com/railtrail.asp), a scenic, 25-mile walking/jogging/bike path that runs through the spine of the Cape where, in the 1800s, a passenger railroad once operated.

Insider Tip: At the base of the iconic Pilgrim Monument is the Provincetown Museum (pilgrim-monument.org), which exhibits a fascinating collection of artifacts from the Pilgrims’ arrival and settlement on the Cape.
