Play With and Help Save Cats at Posh Pets Rescue

Best Friends Animal Society’s furry weekend at the County Center

If you love cats—which we think is a lot of you—then you’re in luck this weekend. At the County Center, you can be surrounded by them.

This Saturday, November 16th from 10 – 7 pm, and Sunday, November 17th, from 10 – 5 pm, the Best Friends Animal Society is hosting Posh Pets Rescue, part of the Pet Super Adoption Weekend. They need volunteers to help handle the animals they have up for adoption and need “fosters” who can possibly keep a dog or two overnight on Sunday after the event.

“We rescue dogs and cats on death row in shelters all over New York City,” says Posh Pets Volunteer Veteran Brighid Ghosio.

Posh Pets Rescue is an organization devoted to the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of homeless animals (many of whom have been rescued at the last minute from kill shelters).

Ghosio says many animals are given up because their owners can’t afford them or landlords ban pets.

“Owners usually don’t realize they’re sending their animals to a shelter to be euthanized, or they just don’t care,” she explains.

That’s where Posh Pets Rescue comes in.

According to Ghosio, each pet is fully vetted (neutered/spayed and medically treated) and trained before being placed in a permanent home—hence adoption fees. Also, each animal is placed in a foster home before adoption to make sure they are suitable. This ensures everyone involved is aware of the animal’s issues in advance.

“Fostering is a great way to experience what owning an animal is like without fully committing,” said Ghosio when asked why she recommends fostering. “It’s also helpful in socializing the animal.”

Posh Pets Rescue doesn’t have a shelter or receive public funding. It relies exclusively on a network of foster homes; relatively, donations are accepted via credit card on their website.

There will be about 700 animals from 35 groups up for adoption this weekend. Each group or shelter will have its own adoption process and fees. Planning to adopt?
