It was during a break between the line-caught Atlantic halibut course and the prime dry-aged strip loin with potato terrine that a guest at the 7th annual gala for the Copland House exclaimed, “This is the only gala where people like the food.” Ahh, the food—this time whipped up by three-star chef Michael White at his newest Manhattan restaurant, Ai Fiori—is always divine at Copland House galas (previous ones were held at Daniel, Le Bernardin, the Four Seasons, Del Posto…). But, so is the music—and music, is of course, what the Copland House, the only composer’s home in the US devoted to tending and replenishing our nation’s musical legacy—is all about. “Music did not stop at the end of the eighteenth century,” said Executive Director Michael Borskin, who, with his wife, Elizabeth Dworkin, is the driving force behind the gala. Actor (Loving and All My Children) and artist James Kiberd of Dobbs Ferry was the night’s auctioneer. Among the items auctioned: a pair of Richard Nixon’s cufflinks and a portrait of Ronald Reagan by freelance illustrator Alan Reingold of Mount Kisco. At the end of the night, at our table, we were taking votes on which of the four courses served was the best. Dessert—panna cotta with green-apple sorbet—won.
