Girl Scouts Gala
Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson celebrated its 100th anniversary with a Centennial Gala at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Tarrytown. More than 300 guests helped honor Women of Leadership and Excellence including Congresswoman Nita Lowey, actress Vanessa Williams, entrepreneur Elizabeth Bracken-Thompson, and IBM’s Watson Women represented by Katharine Frase. Also honored was a Young Woman of Leadership and Excellence, Marissa Contento of Briarcliff High School, who has performed hundreds of hours of community service. The event raised $180,000 for Girl Scouts programs that serve more than 32,000 girls in grades K-12 throughout the lower Hudson Valley.

Bookworm Bash
At the Westchester Library System’s 21st Annual Book and Author Luncheon, we asked New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik how he got to Tappan Hill in Tarrytown, where the sold-out event was held. “Metro-North,” answered the charming Francophile, who lives on the Upper East Side. “I love it. We take it for granted, the Hudson River, don’t we?” Gopnik, there to discuss his latest novel, The Table Comes First, was joined by authors Benjamin Busch (Dust to Dust ), whose mother, he told the very receptive crowd, was a librarian, and Hallie Ephron (Come and Find Me)—yes, Nora’s sister. “She’s not my only sister,” the author pointed out. “I do have two other sisters.” She also confirmed what Nora Ephron (Crazy Salad, Heartburn, When Harry Met Sally, I Remember Nothing) has more than hinted at: “My mother was a piece of work.”
