The Burke Rehabilitation Hospital and Burke Medical Research Institute honored author Lauren Manning; Ron Cohen, MD; and David Carmel with the 2012 Burke Award at The Ritz-Carlton, Westchester, in White Plains. Manning, author of the New York Times bestselling memoir Unmeasured Strength, completed her rehabilitation at Burke after suffering catastrophic burns during the September 11 attacks. Dr. Cohen is founder, president, and CEO of Acorda Therapeutics, Inc., a company dedicated to the development of therapies that can restore neurological function. Carmel, co-founder of Carmel Asset Management, LLC, a Manhattan-based private investment partnership, previously worked on the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative and advised New York Governors Spitzer and Paterson on the creation of the $600 million Empire State Stem Cell Trust Fund.
“Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is proud to continue its tradition of recognizing those who have made significant contributions to the disabled and those who have inspired us by overcoming great adversity,” said Mary Beth Walsh, MD, CEO of Burke Rehabilitation Hospital.
CNN anchor John Berman led the event as the master of ceremonies. Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and White Plains Mayor Tom Roach were among the 350 guests.
