No More Excuses

Okay, I’ll tell you what gets me really mad: people who make excuses for not doing things because, well (and hearing these words can make me go ballistic), “There’s nothing to do here; it’s Westchester, not the City.” Are you kidding me? If you live here and think that, well, I’ve got news for you: you don’t know this county.

Just a few of the things I did in the past month or so. I went to Caramoor to hear the world’s leading banjo virtuoso, Béla Fleck, play an electric banjo (a first for me) as well as perform with the very colorful and talented Mali-singer Oumou Sangare and her band. I attended a screening of Julie & Julia at the Jacob Burns Film Center that was followed by a Q & A session with the film’s screenwriter and director, Nora Ephron, a long-time hero of mine. (By the way, Ron Howard, was at the screening too—I guess he doesn’t think there’s nothing to do in Westchester). I went to the Tarrytown Music Hall to hear former Mavericks frontman Raul Malo belt out tunes in his husky, amazing voice that some say is on par with Sinatra’s and other great crooners’.

The list of local events I wasn’t able to make it to is of course much, much longer. And this was during the supposedly slow summer. Here comes the hopping fall. This month Articles Editor Marisa LaScala lets you in on hundreds of cultural events planned for the fall season. So, please, no more excuses. You don’t have to get on the Metro-North to be a culture vulture. There’s plenty of culture right here.
