Abis Japanese Restaurant in Mamaroneck is no more; in its place: La Herradura (406 Mamaroneck Ave 914-630-2377), a 4,000-square-foot, bi-level Mexican eatery with a sister restaurant in New Rochelle. Dishes to try include chiles rellenos, shrimp in tequila sauce, chicken enchiladas verdes (green sauce), and chimichanga (deep-fried burrito). Entrées cost between $13 and $22. If nothing else, treat yourself to a drink at the margarita bar! La Herradura is open every day for lunch and dinner

Northern Italian restaurant Il Castello (576 Mamaroneck Ave, Mamaroneck 914-777-2200) has opened in the space that once housed Il Teatro. The 65-seat restaurant specializes in homemade pastas plus tableside presentations of Caesar salad, whole roasted fish, and zabaglione. Mains, which cost from $14 to $26, include veal scaloppine, shrimp scampi, chicken Calabrese, and spaghetti primavera. Lunch is offered Tuesday through Friday; dinner Tuesday through Sunday

Rockland County-based wholesaler Carousel Cakes (866-659-2253) has a new version of the Yule log: chocolate chocolate-chip cake covered in chocolate ganache. Serving eight to 10, it’s available at Cherry Lawn Farms (815 Weaver St, New Rochelle 914-632-1850), Lords’ Farm (1120 E Boston Post Rd, Mamaroneck 914-777-1108), First Stop Café (3 Fisher Ave, Tuckahoe 914-779-4411), DeCicco’s Food Market (Pelham 914-738-1377; Ardsley 914-813-2009), and Rye Ridge Deli (128 S Ridge St, Rye Brook 914-937-2131). In-store pick up: $25; online: $46.95

Andy Vitrone and Jeff Goodwin, owners of gourmet shop Wm Nicholas & Co (19 Edgemont Rd, Katonah 914-232-1949), Willy Nick’s Restaurant & Bar (17 Katonah Ave, Katonah 914-232-8030), and the newly opened Willy Nick’s Courtside Café (Saw Mill Club, 77 Kensico Dr, Mount Kisco 914-241-0797), have hired Michael Juers as chef for all three businesses. Juers formerly owned Fusions New World Cuisine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and before that worked at the 21 Club in Manhattan

There are special flavors for the holidays at Longford’s Own-Made Ice Cream (4 Elm Pl, Rye 914-967-3797; 1941 Palmer Ave, Larchmont 914-834-0207; 146 Sound Beach Ave, Old Greenwich, CT 203-637-0480) including coffee with Kit Kat pieces; almond cookie chunk, peppermint stick, crushed ginger, pumpkin pie, cinnamon, and black currant sorbet.
