Modernist Masterwork for Sale

Modern furniture designer Karim Rashid’s house is for sale.

Rashid, who has also designed furnishings for major brands such as Umbra, Alessi, Georg Jensen, Kenzo, Issey Miyake, and Method, is selling his 2200-square-foot Karl Koch-designed weekend getaway in Scarborough. Perhaps you own Rashid’s funky Umbra Oh Chair or his Techtronic Industries’s handheld mini vacuum, Dirt Devil.

Rashid’s home, which we featured in our Spring 2005 edition of Westchester Magazine’s Home & Garden, is just one of 12 remaining kit homes designed by Koch in the mid 1950s. And with the exception of a 1,500- square-foot redwood deck and a few minor modifications including air conditioning, nothing has changed. Even the color scheme has remained the same—the original yellow and blue still covers the exterior.
Rashid describes the style as “sensualist minimalism.” The furniture in the house? Offer him a price.

And if it’s historic appeal is not enough, the house is 45 minutes to Manhattan and within walking distance to the Metro-North and the Hudson River.
