Little Mumbai Market

Whether you decide to be traditional or adventurous with your order, you won’t end up spending much at Chef Bonnie Saran’s ode to the street foods of Mumbai and Paris; you’ll have to do a bit of menu scanning to find an item that even reaches $10.

Don’t let the low prices deter your inner highbrow gourmand—this is seriously delicious fare, albeit presented informally in a funky setting replete with fun impressions of Mumbai’s street vibe (paint can light fixtures, bicycle tire wall hangings, the ceiling painted in the style of street art).

Craving the comfort of more familiar street eats? Order one of the fresh-off-the-griddle crêpes, which have a pleasingly soft naan bread quality; there are approximately 15 each of sweet and savory varieties. From the savory options try the bacon, cheddar, and sunny-side-up egg; chicken with sherried crimini mushrooms; and the Middle Eastern with hummus, arugula, cucumber, green olives, and feta. It’s best to choose the buckwheat flour crêpe, which yields a heftier wrap. On the sweet side, Nutella and banana, lemon curd and fresh berries, and dulce de leche are all first-rate options.

For those with more exploratory palates, there’s Indian food-cart fare such as Frankie rolls (grilled bread wraps); rice bowls with veggies, chicken, lamb, or goat; and pani puri (puffed bread with potatoes and chickpeas); keema pav (minced lamb with roasted spices, served on buttered bread); and bhel puri (puffed rice crispies with potatoes, onions, and mint and tamarind chutneys).

It wouldn’t be a complete Little Mumbai experience without a lassi (smoothie)—the Fig Me Up with fig, spinach, mango, pineapple, banana, and almond milk is a winner.

Upon entering the 1,350-square-foot space, there’ll likely be a crowd ahead of you waiting for one of the 20 or so seats. If you don’t have the patience, make the short drive up to Mount Kisco to try one of Saran’s other “little” businesses—Little Crêpe Street, Little Kebab Station, Little Spice Bazaar, and Little Drunken Chef—and expect a similarly happy and vibrant setting as the wonderful Little Mumbai Market.
