Oct 6: Inter-American Water Day • Created in 1992 by a joint declaration of several public health and environmental groups and observed on the first Saturday of October, this day recognizes the priceless commodity that covers 70 percent of the globe and comprises about 70 percent of our bodies.
Oct 7: You Matter to Me Day • Founded by the loved ones of Bill and Bryce Pope, a father and son who were killed in an auto accident, the day is designed to encourage the appreciation of those we love. As the day’s official site explains, it’s about “four simple words, one single phrase, that makes a profound difference to all who hear it and share it.” (youmattertomeday.com)
Oct 12: The Day of Six Billion • This year marks the 13th anniversary of the date that the United Nations declared the world population reached six billion people. In case you’re wondering, we hit seven billion in October of 2011—or last March—depending on whom you ask.
Oct 21-27: National Respiratory Care Week • Traditionally held during the last full week of October and founded by the American Association of Respiratory Care, the week is meant, the association’s website informs, to “recognize the respiratory care profession and promote awareness of lung health issues and practices.” (aarc.org/rcweek)
And a heads-up to flying mammal lovers, coffee junkies, and computer hackers: October is also Bat Appreciation Month, Caffeine Addiction Recovery Month, and National Cyber Security Awareness Month (you can thank the folks at Homeland Security for that one).
