Labor of Love

New baby business born in Tuckahoe.

The bibs and blankets are cute as a button. They are part of a new line of fashionable, funky baby essentials called—what else?—Button, the brainchild of hip Westchester mom Karen Roche. “The idea was born before my daughter was born,” says Roche, referring to her daughter, Caitlin. Roche started designing hip baby products—in her head. “I can’t draw or paint,” she says. Spreading the 70 fabric swatches she ordered out on the living-room floor of her Tuckahoe duplex, she aimed to find the perfect contrasting combinations—a soft paisley with a bright stripe, a honeycomb polka-dot with a bold swirling pattern.

What’s next? The line just launched last year, and the bags are brand new. Beyond that, Roche says, “At the risk of sounding ridiculous, truly a goal of mine is never to get so big that the quality or the design falls short. Another goal is to have this everywhere. I think the possibilities are endless.”
