One local drama club raises the curtain on its 100th show.

Archbishop Stepinac High School deserves a big “Bravo!” this month. With its new production of Beauty and the Beast, the school’s drama club will be marking an important milestone: its 100th show. “It’s pretty breathtaking,” says Frank Portanova, the club’s director since 2001. “We started off in 1948, when Truman was in office.” Since then, the club has had some notable achievements. In the 1960s, Stepinac was the place where the acting bug bit Jon Voight and Alan Alda. More recently, in 2009, the club was selected from 60 across the nation to perform in Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival, where its production of Curtains received four out of five stars by the festival’s reviewers. Beauty and the Beast will be performed at the school May 6, 7, 13, and 14 at 7:30 pm, and May 14 at 1:30 pm. For or more information, call (914) 946-4800, ext. 243.
