I recently heard a Russian proverb that said, “A kind word is like a spring day.” Interesting thought. Hoping to usher in the season on a dismal winter morning filled with news about falling stocks and rising unemployment, I figured, why not be liberal with my greetings and compliments? Perhaps—just perhaps—I could hurry it along. Not long after, spring sprung (most likely due to the tilt of the earth’s axis rather than my munificent generosity) and I discovered that the proverb works in reverse, as well: a spring day is like a kind word.
I can’t think of a year when we’ve needed spring’s arrival—or, for that matter, a little TLC—more than this one. With this issue, we hope to use kind words—and our kind of words—to spread a little warmth, a little light. In addition to stunning homes suffused with color, you’ll find glorious gardens (one with a stunning planted landscape flowing with water features), floral jewelry that provides an excuse for a night on the town, and antiquing hotspots for half-day trips right in our own county (sunglasses required).
For inspiration, read about Bobbie Gottlieb, founder and CEO of mega-success Two’s Company, who welcomes spring in her Rye home by swapping out rugs, upholstery, and decorative items. (Forget seasonal allergies— this lady’s got seasonal accessories.) Or check out Mark Egener’s Bedford Hills garden, a riot of color as 30,000 tulips bloom.
Spring just feels promising. Getting yourself—and your home—ready for it is something we can all feel bullish about.
