Burt Koyner is known to many people at the hospital and in the community. An Ossining resident, he operated an Army/Navy store called Shuberts in Tarrytown for 40 years, until 2009. Incredibly sociable and full of energy, Burt wasted no time in joining the ranks of the Phelps Volunteers. For the past seven years, he has worked as a transporter, bringing patients by wheelchair or stretcher to and from medical procedures and diagnostic tests, or to the front door as they head for home.
Burt feels strongly about making a positive contribution to his community hospital, and he enjoys volunteering his time. “The medical staff and employees are truly a pleasure to work with,” says Burt. “They’re so friendly and caring.” Burt’s commitment to Phelps and his wonderful outgoing personality are appreciated by all who know him, which is why in April, members of the Phelps Auxiliary elected him to be their new president. Under his leadership, the organization will undoubtedly thrive.
About the Auxiliary
The Phelps Hospital Auxiliary, established in 1955, is a network of dedicated men and women who provide volunteer services and participate in fundraising activities to support the hospital. From the time Phelps opened its doors 60 years ago, the Auxiliary has been an important hospital resource. Auxilians have developed and implemented many fundraising projects and are responsible for overseeing the hospital’s gift shop and the Cherry Door thrift shop in Tarrytown. The Auxiliary’s support has helped to finance hospital renovations, capital improvements and the purchase of medical equipment. Auxilians take pride in knowing that the financial support they provide ultimately helps to save lives.
