There’s nothing more galling than sitting at home, watching someone else having all the fun. That’s what we thought, anyway, when we tuned into PBS to see Gwyneth Paltrow, Mario Batali, and Mark Bittman frolicking in sunny Spain. What to do? Do as we did, and console yourself at Peniche, where warm Valenciameets White Plains.
For the purest blast of Spanish corazon, tuck into one of Chef Goncalves’s (that’s right—he of Ritzy-Carlton’s 42) well-curated Spanish cheese plates. Sip an Alvariñho as you progress from mild, ineffably subtle Manchego to funky, goaty Garroxta. Finish with a blast of intense, salty, mouth-watering Cabrales—that eye-popping blue cheese that gives even Stilton the nudge. A sip here, a bite there, and Chef Clogs and Gwyneth Paltrow be damned—you’ve done a tour of Spain right here in White Plains.
