Affogato and Coffee Granita with Lemon Sorbet
Iced coffee—and lattes, macchiatos, and Frappuccinos—are soooo Starbucks, 1993. One might as well drink these in a flannel shirt to the strains of Pearl Jam. This summer, we’re traveling to the source.
Affogato is the Italian genesis of the whole mock-Italian iced-coffee genre. Take a double shot of freshly pulled espresso and gild it with a generous paddle full of vanilla gelato. Part drink, part dessert, affogato bridges cold and hot, sweet and bitter: it’s dessert and coffee in one hot/cold, bittersweet bite.
Of course, if you’re the espresso-with-lemon-zest type, you can always opt for Emporio Gelato’s espresso-flavored granite with a touch of lemon sorbet. No watered-down, poor excuse for a beverage, this icy, sophisticated dessert is just the thing when a slurp of hot espresso is unthinkable. We think it’s the perfect, dog-days-of-August pick-me-up.
