The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration

You didn’t want Francis Ford Coppola to make new movies, right? (If you disagree, you didn’t see Youth Without Youth.) Instead, the director’s efforts are best spent cleaning up his Godfather series, restoring the films frame-by-frame. The fruits of this labor are collected in this five-disc set, which also includes new making-of featurettes and four short films about The Godfather, including one that’s intriguingly titled “Cannoli.”

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Even though Halloween isn’t for another month, we all have days—no matter what time of year it is—when we can relate to poor little Linus, waiting for the Great Pumpkin that may never arrive. This DVD comes with a remastered version of the 1966 TV special, along with a making-of feature that interviews members of the Schulz family about the TV process. Great Pumpkin not included.

The Fall
DVD Release Date: September 9, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
This strange film is about an injured stuntman who befriends a five-year-old girl in the hospital by telling her a fantastic story—and the story about how the movie was made is equally incredible. Director Tarsem, also known for directing TV ads, would accept commercial assignments only at locations where he wanted to shoot The Fall, and would sneak away from his commercials to shoot his own movie. The star of the film was so young, at first she didn’t understand she was acting. (Her scenes are mostly improvised.) The movie took four years to shoot and was filmed in 18 countries—and features some of the most gorgeous images and most natural performances you’ll see in a film all year.

Collector’s Note: Studios love making new editions of old DVDs, and this month has a wealth of them.
