Good Company

pleasant under glass

Carol Cohen’s chic découpage table accessories are a national sensation, but they’re made right here in New Rochelle.

When Lisa Palmer, wife of fêted chef Charlie Palmer and owner of Sonoma Valley home-store hotspot Lime Stone, was looking for a special piece with local interest, she turned her attention cross country. Palmer had serving trays created, using wine-bottle labels from nearby vineyards, by Carol Cohen of CCCreations Ltd., a New Rochelle-based company that uses découpage to create handmade, decorative pieces. The trays became one of the store’s top sellers, garnering the attention of Food & Wine.

Cohen’s designs—from small bowls to large serving platters, vases, cake plates, and frames—are created using a “reverse” method of découpage (a method consisting of paper designs applied to a glass form, then covered with a food-safe coating). Because the découpage is under glass, the piece makes a unique keepsake, a decorative time capsule capturing the trends of the time—and your interests.

“I did very well with botanical designs this year at the Gift Show,” reports Cohen. Besides corporations (e.g., Kraft, for which she designed trays with various Kraft logos to commemorate the company’s centennial anniversary), retailers and individual shoppers come to her with a wide range of requests, such as a mahjong-themed platter for a Judaica store and an Elvis plate for a fan who once dressed like the King. For this paper-pusher, it’s all just a chance to showcase her talent.
