“This dining-room makeover required new moldings and paneled wainscoting,” says Daniel Contelmo. “The floors were refinished, the doors and windows were replaced, as well as the furniture.” In addition, a new arch frames the entrance to the living room. The room was painted in neutrals—beige on the walls, buff on the paneling, and white on the ceiling—from Benjamin Moore’s Historical Colors collection.

“This entry makes a statement for a new home,” says Contelmo. “It has formal elements and graceful arches, but the five-foot-wide staircase was strategically placed so it did not take center stage.” The custom-stained quarter-sawn white oak floors add warmth.

“This entry hall is part of an 18-month gut renovation of an 8,000-square-foot ‘rambling ranch’ with 23 rooms and nine baths,” says Denise Wenacur. “The client was very open-minded, and allowed us to create many one-of-a-kind items, such as the mahogany-inlaid front door made to our specifications by a wood artisan in Colorado and the painted silver and gold-gilded entry dome that holds a 150-pound chandelier made by a local faux painter from Interior Creations.” The architect on the project was Tom O’Brien and the general contractor was Colin Christiansen. The homeowners were so happy with the results, they threw an open-house party to celebrate.

To create this lovely entryway, designer Katherine Stern removed the existing wall-to-wall carpeting, refinished the wood floors and stairs, and painted the risers, bannisters, and railing with a custom gun-metal color. The chandelier is from the homeowner’s own collection. The chair is part of the set that was ordered for the dining room. “They were part of an inexpensive set I bought on eBay to augment seating in the client’s dining room,” says Stern. “I re-covered it in a brilliant aqua velvet to match the colors I used for dining room and living room.”
