While this Chappaqua pool house is used year-round, summer is when it really shines, the site of weekend swim parties and elegant alfresco dinner parties. “Pool houses, by their very nature, are meant to be fun,” says architect Wallace J. Toscano. “We wanted to make the space exciting inside and out—a bright, cheery place to make the family feel like they were on vacation in their own backyard.”

An overgrown stand of yews and junipers gave way for a terrace running the full length of this 1930s Colonial in Mamaroneck, with a kitchen and dining patio at one end and a “living room” featuring a 12-foot-tall brick-and-stone fireplace on the other. “We set the fireplace square on a rock outcropping so it looks as though it organically arises from the rock,” says Robert Welsch, owner of Westover Landscape Design in Tarrytown. Native shrubs border the property, which looks out over a tidal creek and marshland nature preserve.

For the past eight years, Bedford architect Carol Kurth, FAIA has been renovating different facets of this Chappaqua home. This latest project was commissioned to breathe new life into the existing pool area. “We added pergolas and trellises to the existing fencing and put in a new patio and furniture to give it a spa-like ambience,” Kurth says. “Investing in even the smallest details can elevate a classic backyard setting into a truly luxurious poolside and veranda experience.”
