I may not have seen it all, but I’ve seen plenty in my time. That’s why, as a crusty old journalist, it takes a lot for me to say “Wow!” But that’s exactly what happened several times as we were putting together this year’s Westchester Magazine/Hudson Valley Golf Guide.
My first “Wow!” came when I spent a day with the kids at the First Tee of Metropolitan New York at Mosholu Golf Course. What a bunch of winners! Not just because they were learning the game of golf and having a lot of fun, but because they were also picking up a golf bag full of lessons about life in the process. You can tell it’s a positive experience by the looks on their faces in the story, beginning here.
Lowell Schulman provoked my second “Wow!” I know Lowell, of course — everybody in golf knows him as a great friend to the game — but I’d never really spent much time with him. When I did, I found out what a gracious, energetic gentleman he truly is. And his golf art collection is fabulous!

Then came Pinehurst. “Wow!” is the only word to describe the completely rebuilt Pinehurst No. 2. I’ve played golf all over the world (and on the previous iteration of No. 2), but never on a course like this. Click here to see what makes it so special.
And then came the sessions with three local club fitters. There wasn’t much “Wow!” in my golf swing before, but there sure was (at least as far as I’m concerned) after they finished rebuilding my clubs. Straighter shots, more control, and a lot more distance — why would any golfer not invest a little time and money in those things?
Now it’s spring, time to start looking for this year’s “Wow!” Given all the great golf opportunities in Westchester and the Hudson Valley, I’m sure we’ll find it.
