A lot of percentages have been bandied about recently in our national political discourse: the “greedy” one-percenters, the “disadvantaged” 99-percenters, the 47-percent “who pay no taxes.” I’d like to direct your attention to our cover story, which focuses on a few highly esteemed members of another “percentified” group, characterized by the title of a popular NPR radio show: the 51 percent (i.e., the female population).
If you’ve been blessed, like I have been, to have an abundance of 51-percenters in your family (looking at you, Mom, sister, cousins, and aunts), then the subject of our cover story should come as no surprise to you. Whether it’s helming multinational corporations, shepherding important legislation on Capitol Hill, or advancing the farm-to-table movement, strong, smart, capable women are leading the way in every field and profession. We couldn’t think of anything (or anyone) better to celebrate—and so, for 914INC.’s second-annual Women in Business issue, we are pleased to present 15 of the most influential women in Westchester. Beginning on page 72, you can learn about the impact they’ve had within the county, around the country, and even across the globe.
While some business people, including a few of our influential women, base their success on sales in far-flung destinations, others, like the CEO featured in our “Corner Office” profile (page 24), are trying to corner the market right here in our own backyard. As the head of The Daily Voice, Zohar Yardeni is hoping to monetize local news on the Internet with its group of hyper-local websites.
By the time this issue is in your hands, the last of the leaves will have undoubtedly fallen from the trees, and it will soon be time to set your clocks back an hour. But don’t let the clock run out on 2012 without celebrating the holidays with your colleagues and staff.
