Continuing Education Programs for Adults in Westchester

Your kids aren’t the only ones returning to the hallowed halls of learning.

Living here, you can’t help but be familiar with the stellar reputations of the Scarsdale, Larchmont/Mamaroneck, and Bronxville school systems—they’re why many of us moved here, after all. But did you know these districts have enriching, continuing-education adult programs as well? You don’t have to be a resident of any of these towns to sign up; all classes are the same price for residents and non-residents. Here’s a refresher course for those in a back-to-school frame of mind.

Bronxville Adult School
The school is known for its cooking classes, with approximately 30 offered this fall, many of them in the instructors’ homes.
Need to Know: Classes cost $20 and up.
New for Fall: Belly-Dancing for Fitness and Fun; Nook and Kindle: Buying an e-reader, Woodworking

Larchmont Mamaroneck Continuing Education
Literacy and language arts, the former of which is co-administered by Southern Westchester BOCES and the Center for Continuing Education, is a backbone of the program. “Many au pairs take ESL courses here, as do students from France and Japan, who sign up for our popular American Literature class,” says Executive Director Sandie Conner.
Need to Know: Fees vary but run as low as $10 an hour.
New for Fall: Vietnam War via Film; Neck and Shoulder Self Acupressure; Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro Editing.

Scarsdale Adult School
The school system serves more than 3,000 students annually across 13 facilities in Lower Westchester, offering more than 400 courses per year. Past faculty has included Warren Buffett, Dean Rusk, and The Peak DJ Jimmy Fink, though Executive Director Jill Raizen Serling is quick to point out that all teachers are highly regarded in their fields.
Scarsdale Adult School offers a variety of day and evening classes, with a focus on the humanities, including Arab Spring: A Long and Uncertain Road Ahead; BookTalk with Harriet Sobol, a New York Times contributor; and Opera Appreciation with John King, the director of music for Hitchcock Presbyterian Church in Scarsdale.
Need to Know: Prices vary between $17 and $30 a session.
New for Fall: Roots of Chinese Culture, World Religions II, Memory Boosting
