Three seasons of the year, we hunker down in our homes, cocooned in our designer kitchens, surrounded by Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, media rooms in front of 60-inch HDTVs, or snuggled beneath down comforters, all cozy in bed. But come summer, it’s time to segue into the great outdoors.
Ideally, the prep work has already been done: Lawn furniture and grills out from under protective tarps, perennial beds mulched, gardens tilled, and tiny flowers already blooming on the heirloom tomatoes (fingers crossed that this year’s weather will be kinder to them than last). All that’s left to do is park yourself on your deck, patio, or poolside for alfresco entertaining, grilling burgers, or simply lazing the day away on (your choice) a chaise, hammock, or pool float, icy mojito in hand.
Okay, maybe your backyard isn’t set for this idyllic scene, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy summer fun, Westchester-style. Go on a hike in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, spend the day at Playland, go kayaking on the Hudson, sailing on the Sound, or bask on one of our beaches, preferably with your copy of Westchester Home close at hand.
But you know what they say about all play and no work. We’d like to invite all area interior designers and architects to set aside some time this summer to enter our first design contest. We’re looking for both traditional and contemporary designs, large and small projects. (Contest terms and conditions are outlined on page 76.) We’ll feature the most elegant, functional, and beautiful winners in our Winter 2012 issue. We’re looking forward to seeing your work in our pages.’
