Chic Covers Up

Collectible magazine covers get framed.

As magazine junkies and décor devotées, we’re loving the original magazine covers showcased at sister shops Chappaqua Framing in Chappaqua and Framing at Depot Place in Scarsdale. Looking for a whimsical, historically significant piece of art with some personal meaning—minus the usual over-the-top price tag? This pair of custom framing shops/art galleries has a collection of more than 1,000 covers—including rare and vintage—from such seminal publications as Vogue, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar. (Alas, no Westchester Magazine or Westchester Home—yet.)

“Quality magazine covers are midway between art and a collectible,” says Umberto B. Calabro, chief designer for the stores. “It attracts both sides of the coin.” The shops’ New Yorker cover offerings are particularly extensive. Ranging in time from the publication’s launch in 1925 to the present day, many feature the illustrations of such esteemed artists as Saul Steinberg, Peter Arno, and Art Spiegelman. Likewise, its Vogue offerings, from 1915 through the 1940s, showcase the work of some of the 20th century’s most talented artists, cover illustrators, and photographers, including Salvador Dali, Erté, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, and Annie Leibovitz.
