A common misconception about Cinco de Mayo is that it is Mexico’s Independence Day. In actuality, the day commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Though barely recognized in Mexico, the date has become sort of a “Mexican Pride Day” in the United States. And with any celebration, there is undoubtedly a party. Here are the best places to be in Westchester on the fifth of May.
Don Emilio at Lobo’s Café (57-59 King St, Chappaqua, 914-238-2368) It doesn’t more authentic than this. Don Emelio’s Chef Jose Cruz Ramierez is from Puebla, the town where Mexico’s famous battle took place. Look for a special Mexican menu with an abundance of margaritas and mojitos. Sip on authentic $7 Mexican beers like Dos Equis, Negra Modelo, and Pacifico, and listen to live mariachi music from 4 pm on.
Tomatillo (13 Cedar St, Dobbs Ferry, 914-478-2300) Tomatillo, known for its healthy California-style cuisine, will feature more traditional dishes such as a Mexican chili with mole to go along with its house-made, all-natural lime-juice margaritas at $5. Try its local Captain Lawrence Pale Ale brew as well for $6 a draft.
Michael’s Tavern (150 Bedford Rd, Pleasantville, 914-769-9849) Okay, Michael’s isn’t truly your ideal Mexican joint, but these folks still know how to put on a party. With $5 margaritas and $3 Coronas, and plenty of college co-eds around, you’ll think you were in Mexico by the time the night is over.
Tequila Sunrise (145 Larchmont Ave, Larchmont, 914-834-6378) Get started early at Tequila Sunrise. From 4 to 6 pm, the Corona Party Crew will arrive, giving out $3 Coronas and Coors Lights. The Corona girls will be giving away hats and t-shirts until 6 pm when a mariachi band will play to all patrons. Then, at 10 pm, the Sauza Tequila party crew will be giving away party favors and $3 shots of tequila. Finally, Tequila Sunrise will have a disc jockey playing the latest tunes until the wee hours of the morning.
Blue Moon Mexican Café (7-27 Pondfield Rd, Bronxville, 914-337-4000) Enjoy the mariachi band from 4 pm until 10 pm and the outrageous drink specials going on from 4 pm to 7 pm. For the full three hours margaritas will only be $4, sangrias are $3, and Coors Lights will be $3. Make sure you ask for complimentary quesadillas or nachos as well. Don’t be afraid to order up a dish like the chipotle baby back ribs with French fries for $19.95.
Porter House Bar (169 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains, 914-831-5663) If it’s a party, you know the bars on Mamaroneck Avenue are going to be involved. Specifically, Porter House. Along with a Mexican-themed menu, the bar will be offering $4 Dos Equis’ and Corona for $4 and margaritas for $5.
Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar (230 Mill St, Greenwich, CT, 203-813-3555) This place is so hot that you need an invitation to attend its Cinco de Mayo party. In order to obtain a ticket, you must get to the restaurant by May 4 and ask about the party. Once there, every patron will enjoy passed foods and two hours of give away including free Coronas and Margaritas. That’s right, these $6 and $12 drinks, respectively, will be given away for nothing. Don’t miss out!
