Building the Today Media Building Blog Phase 4

We continue to make steady progress in retrofitting our new office space according to our architectural design and specifications. Under the coordination of Murphy Brothers Contracting, work over the last several weeks included:

• Connecticut Thermofoam completed the taping (the joint compound that ensures seamless-looking walls and a necessary step before painting can begin) on the second floor and continued taping on the lower level
• PolyTemp continued installing the roof and second floor ductwork for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system
• continued installation of the data and communications wiring on the lower level
• determining measurements for fabricating and building the restroom partitions
• completing the painting of the ceilings
• appliying the primer and first coat on the second floor sheetrock in preparation for painting
• All-Time Detection completed the required pre-wiring in preparation for installing the security alarm system
• All-Time Detection continued the wiring required for installing the fire alarm system
• Installation of the restroom floor tiles and installed and grouted the wall tiles; continued installing the lobby tiles
• Murphy Brothers Contracting wood shop completed rebuilding the main stairway to meet the current building code requirements

Next on our agenda

Next, we will focus on priming the installed and taped sheetrock on the first floor and begin installing the sheetrock and taping on the lower level. PolyTemp also will complete installing all remaining HVAC ductwork.

Q & A with Maya Pesok, owner, Connecticut Thermofoam, LLC

Q. Describe the work you’re doing in retrofitting Westchester Magazine’s new building.
Since our company specializes in interior finishes, including metal framing, insulation, drywall, and acoustic ceilings, we implemented all of our specialties beginning with framing the interior partitions of the offices with heavier gauge to reduce vibration combined with sound insulation to create a quieter and more personal work environment. We also installed the drywall and the acoustic ceilings. Now we are in the final stages of the project. After we finish this work, other steps can move forward, including painting and installing carpeting and lighting.

Q. What type of insulation did you install?
We used close cell foam insulation on the new exterior walls for high-end insulation and energy efficiency. We used sound insulation in the interior partitions.

Q. What are the benefits of using spray foam insulation?
Foam insulation is manufactured on site, which makes it possible to have a perfect fit, seal the building envelope, and maintain greater temperature control during the winter and summer, as well as block all air movements and exterior sound.

Q. How is spray foam insulation better for the environment?
Spray foam insulation helps reduce the cost and use of heating and air conditioning. The foam we use is a soy-based product that also includes recycled plastic bottles. The architectural plans call for exposed beams in some of the open areas. With spray foam insulation, we’re better able to pour and place the insulation to support that open design.

Q. What has been your biggest challenge so far?
The job was challenging because of the tight schedule and last-minute changes that were necessary for a perfect finish. Regardless of last-minute issues, we are still able to complete the project on time. The end result is going to be awesome!
