Beyond Brunch

Our annual guide to Mother’s Day celebrations that are way more fun than scarfing down eggs.

Your mom is one-of-a-kind—the day honoring her should be, too. So why settle for taking Mom to brunch year-in, year-out? This year, break the routine and check out these (more original) ideas for events taking place over Mother’s Day weekend.

For the Down-Home Mom

Mother’s Day at Stone Barns
Take your mom to hang out with other mothers—mothers of baby animals, that is—by showing her around Stone Barns. After ogling baby animals, shop at the farmer’s market and garden sale. May 9 at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, Pocantico Hills (914-366-6200).

For the Classical Mom

Jeffrey Weiss Concert
Your mom has refined taste. Bring her to the oh-so-picturesque Lyndhurst mansion, where the carriage house will be filled with the cultured sounds of Summit Music Festival musicians performing chamber pieces. Take a post-performance lingering stroll on the gorgeous grounds. May 9, Lyndhurst, Tarrytown (914-631-4481).

For the Artsy Mom

Marlene Ferrell Parillo: Dreamcity
Let Mom mingle with like-minded art lovers at the opening reception for the new exhibition at the Clay Art Center. There, she’ll be able to make insightful comments about artist Marlene Ferrell Parillo ceramic sculptures and mixed-media tapestries. May 8, Clay Art Center, Port Chester (914-937-2047).

For the Theatrical Mom

Rodgers & Hammerstein Celebration
If your mom digs Rodgers & Hammerstein, this concert will feature all of her favorite songs without limiting her to a single show. Broadway stars Teri Dale Hansen and and Nat Chandler belt out selections from South Pacific, The Sound Of Music, State Fair, The King And I, Carousel and more. May 9, White Plains Performing Arts Center, White Plains (914-328-1600).

For the Cool Mom

New Urban Jazz
Jazz and funk sounds come together for a performance of “New Urban Jazz” at ArtsWestchester’s Arts Exchange. Neighbor Bob Baldwin and singer/songwriter Porter Carroll, Jr., share a bill for a cool evening of music. May 8, Arts Exchange, White Plains (914-428-4220).

For the Hot Mom

Neighbor’s Link’s Festival de Primavera
Take your mom to shake things up to Latin rhythms at an evening of cocktails, dinner, and dancing. The Argentina-born percussionist Norberto Goldberg and his band, Amazonas, provide the soundtrack for the evening. Best of all, the night’s proceeds benefit Neighbor’s Link (and your donation there will last much longer than a bouquet of store-bought flowers). May 8, Glen Arbor Golf Club, Bedford Hills (914-666-3410).

For the Swingin’ Mom

Hula Hoop Festival
Mom’s hips will be a-swinging when hula hoopers descend on Memorial Park in Nyack, New York. And, when she gets tired, she can enjoy contests, live music, and other surprises at this free outdoor event. Bring your own hoop, or buy one there. May 8, Memorial Park, Nyack.
