Beyond Brunch With Mom

Show your mom you’re more creative than the rest of the kids out there.

Going out to brunch on Mother’s Day has become as cliché as the obligatory heart-shaped box of chocolates on February 14. We’re Westchester—our moms are not impressed by mere omelets and we can come up with something more interesting to do with the women who gave us life. Here are some suggestions for alterative activities taking place during Mother’s Day weekend.

For the Classic Mom. Your mom enjoys the finer things, so take her on a tour of Caramoor’s Mediterranean-style Rosen House before a recital with soprano Jennifer Zetlan at the Mother’s and Others Tea Musicale. The day ends with tea sandwiches, scones with clotted
cream, and other bits of refinery (May 9, Caramoor, Katonah, 914-232-5035).

For the Thrill-Seeking Mom. There’s a murder on the high seas—and your mom is on the case!—when the Killing Company presents A Mystery for Mom! Rather than a brunch with only your own conversation to pass the time, enjoy a four-course meal while participating in a humorous and interactive murder mystery (May 9, Tahiti Queen River Boat, Charles Point Marina, Peekskill, 845-597-7272).

For the Hip Mom. In the ’90s, folkie Jill Sobule wrote a song called “I Kissed a Girl” that was both sweeter and more subversive than today’s caterwauling Katy Perry tune of the same name. Take Mom to hear Sobule perform songs from her newest album, California Years, over drinks and food at the Watercolor Café (May 10, Watercolor Café, Larchmont, 914-834-2213).

For the Jazzy Mom. Just as you pay homage to your mother, who inspires you, saxophonist Joe Lovano and his nonet celebrate his idols: Miles Davis, Tadd Dameron, Thelonius Monk, and Charlie Parker (May 9, Paramount Center for the Arts, Peekskill, 914-739-2333).

For the Green Mom. Strolling the grounds of the historic Lyndhurst Estate is always a pleasure, but more so when the Garden Club of Irvington hosts its annual Garden Fair. See (and purchase) hard-to-find plants for sale, get advice on gardening from local experts, and plant with the kids, all for—don’t tell this part to Mom—free admission (May 9, Lyndhurst, Tarrytown, 914-631-4481).
