When Susan G. Holmes’s mother died 11 years ago, the Chappaqua resident, a former attorney, decided to make jewelry. “I was looking for something solitary to lose myself in and I foolishly thought it would be cheaper than therapy,” she says. She started fooling around with beads and “loved it.”
Eventually, Holmes launched SGH Designs. Today, her collection includes sterling silver and 14-, 18-, and 22-karat gold necklaces and bracelets. Her designs feature both precious (sapphires, rubies, black diamonds, etc.) and semi-precious (turquoise, amethysts, peridot, etc.) stones, as well as all types and colors of pearls. Holmes uses silk thread and knots to string her jewelry. Prices for Holmes’s designs—several of which have made guest appearances on TV in Desperate Housewives and Cavemen—range from $150 to $1,000+, and are available at Petticoat Lane in Chappaqua and at sghjewelry.com.
