Q: Is my old bottle of Champagne still good?
A: “In the U.S., a standard non-vintage bottle of Champagne can last easily for five years,” says Jeremy Noye, a wine buyer for Zachys in Scarsdale. “But a vintage bottle might last for ten years. In fact, depending on the producer and the quality, a vintage Champagne can last up to twenty years under ideal conditions and temperature.”
But once you pop that cork, drink up—pronto. “If you must save an open bottle for later, you’ll need an adequate Champagne stopper to hold the pressure in the bottle. After twenty-four hours, the perlage—carbonation—will diminish, resulting in fewer bubbles. The flavor may hold for longer, but the essence of the Champagne—which is in the perlage—will fade.”
