Aimee Mann wrote all of the original songs—and even earned an Oscar nomination—for the moody movie Magnolia. That doesn’t sound very
Christmassy, does it? Believe it or not, Mann is secretly harboring some holiday cheer, and she’ll let it all out at the Tarrytown Music Hall on December 15. The Second Annual Christmas Tour features the former ’Til Tuesday frontwoman leading a roster of surprise guests in songs from her newest holiday album, One More Drifter in the Snow, which includes a bunch of classic tunes and two beautiful originals. [Lunch, Lit, and Law]

Head to Abigail Kirsh at Tappan Hill on December 3 for some heavy fare—and we’re not talking about the food. The Katonah Museum of Art’s ninth annual Literary Lunch features some deep thinkers discussing their thought-provoking books. The panel of speakers includes Michael Beschloss, official presidential historian at NBC News and author of Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America 1789-1989; Jeffrey Toobin, senior legal analyst for CNN and author of The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court; and moderator Thomas Edsall, former writer for the Washington Post and current professor at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism. After lunch and a discussion of current issues, the authors will stick around for a book signing, with copies of their tomes available for purchase. For more information, see This Month.

Let’s be honest: no one likes to commute. Finding parking at the train station (or, worse, on New York City streets), planning around the Metro-North timetable, avoiding traffic—it’s all such a hassle. This month, the Insights & Revelations series saves you the trouble by bringing New York City’s acclaimed Symphony Space to Westchester. (Now that’s more like it!) The company will perform The Thalia Follies: A Political Cabaret,  a collection of biting-but-funny songs, sketches, and poetry that takes down everything from the upcoming political election to shopping at Zabar’s.
