The Westchester Philharmonic’s subscription concerts on November 4 at 8 pm and November 5 at 3 pm at The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College will feature the orchestra’s conductor, Paul Lustig Dunkel, on flute; soprano Jennifer Litwin, and violinist Rachel Lee. The program, Court Hearings, includes music by Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Quantz. The orchestra will also make its debut in the Downtown Music at Grace chamber series at Grace Church in White Plains on November 1, 8, and 15 at 12:10 pm (914-682-3707).

Julian Lempert of Bronxville is a Moscow native who composes music for the Olympic Gold Medal-winning figure-skaters Ludmila and Oleg Protopopov. He is also a pianist who will play Beethoven’s Concerto No. 4 in G Major with the Westchester Chamber Orchestra on November 4 at 8 pm at Iona College’s Joyce Auditorium. Barry Charles Hoffman, the orchestra’s founder and artistic director, will conduct (914-654-4926).

The viola, traditionally the butt of jokes, is now the “in” instrument, according to George Drapeau, a violist with the St. Thomas Orchestra, a four-year-old group of 55 professional and avocational players based in Mamaroneck. The orchestra will spotlight the instrument in a concert at the Rye Performing Arts Center on November 5 at 4 pm. Randolph Kelly, principal violist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, will be the soloist in a recently reconstructed solo viola and string concerto by J.S. Bach, drawn from three of Bach’s compositions (914-631-6088).

You may have spotted her in the concertmaster’s chair of the St. Luke’s or Orpheus chamber orchestras, her dark hair swinging in time with her violin. Eriko Sato is a seasoned member of the New York music scene who has also taught at Hoff-Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale for the last 18 years. She will give a recital at the school on November 17 at 8 pm, accompanied by colleagues and her husband, David Oei, a pianist who also teaches at Hoff-Barthelson. Sato says she likes these faculty concerts because “I can play anything I want and invite friends to join me” (914-723-1169).

The Chappaqua Orchestra, a 48-year-old group of professional and volunteer players, has selected its first artist-in-residence: the violin soloist Timothy Fain. He will perform the Samuel Barber Violin Concerto in The Barber of Mount Kisco on November 19 at 3 pm at the Seven Bridges Middle School Auditorium in Chappaqua, with Michael Shapiro conducting the orchestra. Barber lived in Mount Kisco for much of his life (914-921-4642).

Other concerts of note are by the Brentano String Quartet and pianist Mitsuko Uchida at Caramoor on November 5 at 4 pm, and the Sound Shore Chorale’s performance of the Faure Requiem at the Presbyterian Church of New Rochelle, also on November 5 at 4 pm. Richard Slade will conduct (914-636-1583).

The Global Watch Documentary Film Festival is an annual curated series of films focusing on social justice, politics, and history. Directors and other guest speakers chosen to complement the 20-film program will visit the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville from November 1 through 23 (914-773-7663).

Historically, they cavort on screen in utter silence, but the films of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd are also often seen in the company of contemporary live music. Ben Model, who composes for silent films, will play his music on the organ at a screening of works by the silent comedians in the Laurel and Hardy and Friends film series on November 18 at 7:30 pm at Grace Church in White Plains. Bruce Lawton, a film historian, will speak (914-949-0384).

Carol Berkin, author of Revolutionary Mothers: Women in the Struggle for America’s Independence, will speak about her book on November 19 at 3 pm at the Rye Heritage Center in Rye (914-698-9275).

The Royal and Shirley Durst Chair Lecture Series at Purchase College features Tony Kushner, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright (Angels in America, Caroline or Change), on November 13 at 7 pm (914-251-6200).

Blueberry Pond Theatre Ensemble in Ossining stages Through November Moonlight by Jean-Paul DeVellard, from November 3 through December 3. The play’s theme is love transfigured by loss (914-923-3530).
