Advanced Degrees and Per-Pupil Expenditures Above National Average

We’re a very well-educated county. Among our population aged 18 to 24, 17.1 percent have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Only 9.2 percent of Americans in the same group can say that. Once you get up to the ages at which people tend to graduate, the numbers shoot up: A truly impressive 44.4 of us have at least a bachelor’s degree, whereas only 28.2 percent of Americans do.
And, if you’re wondering just how much that all costs, you’ll be glad to know that the average national per-pupil expenditures in 2007 and 2008 were more than $10,000. That sounds impressive, but among Westchester schools that disclosed their finances to Westchester Magazine, not one spends less than $16,000 per student, and some districts—and, by extension, those they tax—pay more than $35,000. It’s up to you if you think it’s good to be on the higher end of that one.
