Acoustic Gunshot Tracking Technology Installed in Mount Vernon and Yonkers

Cops can’t always be all eyes and ears—so what did Mount Vernon and Yonkers do? They decided to install ShotSpotter—a new technology that uses sensors and cameras to swing the nearest camera toward any shot fired in near vicinity. If the view is obstructed, the camera will turn toward the nearest intersection, in order to catch gunmen on the run.

While Mount Vernon’s ShotSpotter system was installed in October (in the roughest areas), Yonkers is expected to be up and running by the end of the year. The system cost $1.5 million to install in each city—with the total cost of $3 million earmarked by the county.
