A Comparison of Safety in Westchester County, NY versus New York, NY, Using the Bestplaces.net Crime Index

But who’s first in safety?

We know some people—and we won’t mention them by name for obvious reasons—who, after driving back to their Westchester homes from work in the evening, leave their keys inside their cars. And they leave them that way all night.
Well, Westchester’s not the worst place to indulge in that kind of laziness. There’s just not that much crime here. We averaged Bestplaces.net’s Crime Index—expressed on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the safest—for Westchester’s 40 municipalities. When it came to property crimes, Westchester ranked a 2, and violent crimes were just a shade higher at 2.5. New York City, on the other hand, scored a 3 in property crimes, but a big, fat 6 in violent crimes.

Now, that doesn’t give us permission to throw common sense out the window, as we often tell our friends with the lax car-key policy. But it means we don’t have to buy them The Club, either—unless we’re all driving in the City together, in which case we also have to remember to stash all our valuables in the glove compartment.
