An outdated bathroom with tight quarters (not to mention pink tile) badly needed a makeover when the homeowners contacted interior designer Debra Funt (Debra Funt Interiors, Scarsdale, 914-715-5797; www.debrafuntinteriors.com).
The designer first found the wall tiles and silver-leaf chicklet lights, which served as inspiration for the rest of the bathroom makeover. Everything ties together beautifully and gives a nod to those two elements, including the details on the floor. “My favorite part of the bathroom design is the milky glass on the floor with the silver leaf,” Funt says. “It’s subtle and adds a little bit of sparkle without being in your face.”
The bathroom, which is currently used primarily by two teenage girls, married Funt’s tailored, sexy, elegant, and quiet style with the girls’ outgoing personalities and desire to have a shiny, feminine space.
The room is long and narrow. The shower was cramped, and the space wasn’t being utilized to full effect. Funt rearranged the bathroom, moving the toilet and expanding the shower across the entire back wall. She also created a design that will last well beyond the use of the teenagers. “Even if the parents don’t want lavender [on the walls] or crystals on the lights after the girls leave, [they] paint the walls and remove the crystals and have a whole different bathroom,” Funt says.
The double vanity is both functional and glamorous. The tiles on the walls serve both the room design and function: They make the room feel larger, and they’re easy to wipe clean.
The result is a bathroom with glitz and glamour—including the crystals in the silver chicklet light fixtures, a request from the girls—that is sophisticated enough that the parents can happily use it when they’re empty nesters someday.
Funt says that when tackling any redesign, homeowners should contract a designer at an hourly rate to sketch out various possibilities, help decide priorities, and make a wish list. This saves time and money in the long run and helps a homeowner budget, maximize space, and avoid problems during construction.
