1. You’ll save a life.
About 2.7 million of the nation’s adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized every year, according to The
Humane Society of the US. (Both the SPCA and the Humane Society in Westchester are no-kill shelters, but both serve as a refuge for animals rescued from kill-shelters.)
2. It’s easy.
You can browse Petfinder.org for adoptable pets (there are more than 300,000 to choose from in locations far and wide), as well as shelters.
3. It’s one-stop shopping.
Animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for diseases, and microchipped. The SPCA will treat an adopted animal that becomes sick from a pre-existing illness for 30 days, free of charge.
4. It’s affordable.
At the SPCA, costs range from $75 for older dogs to $350 for puppies. At the Humane Society of Westchester, fees for cats range from $45 for older cats to $150 for kittens, with discounts available for multiple adoptions. At Love of Dogs (Pet Rescue in Bedford), all dogs are $375. At Pet Rescue (Larchmont), dogs are $300–$450.
5. It’s unconditional love.
Your shelter pet has likely been waiting a long time for you. She knows what love is, and she won’t let you down.
