This White Plains ’50s ranch was a sad sight indeed, with its roof sagging and covered with tarps. But in just eight months, the ugly duckling morphed into a solid Gold LEED-certified marvel, the first single-family home in the County to get that distinction. The renovation expanded the square footage to nearly 3,000, allowing for an open living/dining/kitchen space, deck, and a sumptuous master bedroom suite. “We believe homes should be environmentally responsible, energy efficient, and beautifully designed,” says Michael Murphy of Murphy Brothers Contracting. “The owner of this house is an eco-broker, so, when it came time to renovate, she wanted to put her money where her mouth is.” She invested in geothermal heating and cooling; solar panels with enough juice to power all the electrical needs in the house; LED lighting; and water-saving fixtures. Guess what her monthly energy bills are? Less than $100 for heating and cooling, hot water, and electricity. Murphy Brothers mission accomplished, on all three points.
