4 Fun Water Activities to Try Around Westchester

Get outside and on the water with these activities, which are fun for individuals and groups alike.

As the weather gets warmer, it’s hard to resist the urge to spend all your free time outside. If being active is your favorite way to destress from the work week, try one of these unique ventures.

What’s SUP?

Stand-up paddleboarding, or “SUP” for short, is a cross between kayaking and surfing. Rivertowns SUP & Yoga offers introductory and more advanced classic SUP classes, but SUP Yoga adds an extra dimension of fun, including sunrise yoga for early birds. If you’re not confident in your balance on a paddleboard, RSY also offers indoor yoga classes.

Pedal Party

Enjoy yourself out on the water and sneak in a healthy dose of cardio on the Paddle Pub. Cruising out of Tarrytown, this active booze cruise makes for a fun weekend afternoon. Every seat is equipped with pedals that are hooked up to the large paddle wheel that powers the boat. Ninety-minute voyages include a captain and first mate, party games, and a BlueTooth sound system to blast your jams. Alcohol is BYOB and, yes, there’s a motor in case you’ve sipped too many White Claws.

A Reel Good Time

The Long Island Sound is a great place to fish—home to a myriad of edible species including flounder and sea bass. Booking a fishing excursion with Port Chester’s Fins Up comes complete with bait and equipment, plus all the help a novice or young family member might need. At the end of your charter, they’ll even filet your catch and bag it on ice for you to take home.

Hudson River Recreation offers lessons, tours, rentals, and private kayak trips launching from locations along the Hudson River in Sleepy Hollow and Croton-on-Hudson, as well as at Tarrytown Lakes Park, the Croton River, Rye Town Beach, and Playland Lake. Stand-up paddleboards and Hobie pedalboards are also available (depending on the location), as are canoes. One of the most popular offerings is the sunset kayak tour that sets out just in time to catch the magic hour on the water.
