Sol Lewitt’s Music Collections: Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum’s Latest Exhibit

When people think of artist Sol LeWitt, his minimal, geometric wall drawings immediately pop into mind. But fewer people know about his passion for music—especially classical music. Throughout his life, the artist amassed a collection of more than 3,600 cassette tapes, all thoughtfully organized and catalogued. In an exhibition titled Sol LeWitt: The Music Collection—one of a series of new exhibitions at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum that deal with music in one form or another—LeWitt’s never-before-displayed cassette collection will be assembled in the museum as it would have been in his home in Chester, Connecticut. You can also see the artist’s handwritten logbook that keeps track of all the tapes. Sol LeWitt: The Music Collection will be on view from September 22 to March 9.
