Marina K. Holz, PhD

Dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences and Professor of Cell Biology and Anatomy, New York Medical College (NYMC)

Marina K. Holz, PhD, discovered her passion for science while she was in high school. “My biology teacher recognized my potential and encouraged me to build upon my strengths,” says Holz.

After earning her degree in cell and developmental biology from Harvard Medical School, Holz pursued a career in research, specifically breast cancer and rare diseases. She’s renowned for her work on lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), a rare disease that primarily affects women during their childbearing years.

A grant from The LAM Foundation led Holz into an ongoing clinical trial for a combination drug treatment for patients to improve upon existing treatments. She’s also researching the basic mechanisms of estrogen signaling in an effort to better understand diseases such as LAM and breast cancer, which are dependent on estrogen.

Proud to be a part of NYMC’s legacy of diversity, Holz mentions that about 25 percent of NYMC’s PhD students hail from underrepresented minorities, and more than 60 percent are women.

She credits NYMC’s academic affiliation with Westchester Medical Center for connecting basic science discoveries with clinical research. Although Holz receives funding from the National Institutes of Health, she understands the challenges new scientists face in obtaining grants, so she volunteers with the American Society for Cell Biology’s FRED program, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s IMAGE workshop, and National Research Mentoring Network.

Beyond receiving the American Cancer Society’s Research Scholar Grant and AACR-Bayer Innovation and Discovery Grant, Holz appeared in ABC7’s Emmy-nominated, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer special. She’s also on The LAM Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board.
