While the summer season is nearing its end, outdoor fun is still on full display in Westchester County. Most of our local public pools and beaches remain open until Labor Day, and outdoor dining will continue to be number one on our to-do list. One way to spend a sunny day in the county is by kayaking on the Hudson River, Long Island Sound, or local rivers.
Check out the local companies that offer single and double kayaks and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) rentals throughout the county.
Hudson River Recreation
Whether you’re in the market for kayak or SUP rentals, tours, or even lessons, Hudson River Recreation hosts an array of adventures. Throughout the 914, each paddler will rent high-quality equipment and explore our local rivers by themselves or alongside well-trained staff. Kayaks are available for rent during the season on weekends and holidays from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. After Labor Day, paddlers should see the booking calendar for additional dates.

Croton Point Park
Launch out of Croton Point Park and paddle at your own pace. The company offers hourly rentals of recreational sit-on-top kayaks and SUPs. No experience is necessary for this fun and easy paddle experience. Hudson River Recreation also has rentals for state-of-the-art Hobie Pedalboards, which are unique pedal-driven boards that have handlebars for extra support.

Croton River
Kayak along the Croton River for a serene and picturesque experience. Single, double, and touring kayaks are available for either 1.5-hour or 2.5-hour rentals. The kayak launch is located at the southern end of the Croton-Harmon train station.

Rye Beach
On the other side of the county, Hudson River Recreation offers rentals launching from Rye Town Beach (a.k.a. Oakland Beach). A tranquil paddle on the Long Island Sound is available on single kayaks, double kayaks, SUPs, or Hobie Pedalboards. Rye Beach is a popular destination for stand-up paddleboarding. Taking a paddleboard out on the water is a satisfying workout that requires ample balance and coordination.
Kayaking tours are also available out of Rye Beach and are guided by experienced kayakers. Depending on conditions, the tours might head up north along the beaches and jetties to enjoy views of Playland Park or south following the coastline for stunning views of the Long Island Sound.

Tarrytown
Tarrytown Lakes Park is an ideal destination to introduce kayaking to young children or beginner kayakers looking for a relaxing afternoon on the water. The lakes are home to ducks, herons, turtles, and other wildlife. At this location, Recreational Kayaks and Touring Kayaks are available for rent.

Sleepy Hollow
Charming kayak tours launch out of the historic Sleepy Hollow and are suitable for first-time kayakers and experienced paddlers. During the tour, you’ll glide down the Hudson River and pass the iconic Tarrytown Lighthouse as well as the Tappan Zee Bridge. All tours out of Sleepy Hollow are $89 per person. The two-hour tour is offered in the morning, afternoon, or during sunset. The meeting point for this tour is at Kingsland Point Park.

Playland Park
Playland Park offers single kayaks, double kayaks, and SUP rentals on Playland Lake (Manursing Lake). The 80-acre protected lake is located within the Playland Amusement Park Complex and adjacent to Edith Read Sanctuary. Additionally, the park offers paddleboat rentals, and you have the option of riding in a swan boat or a fire-breathing dragon.

Bear Mountain Bridge Tour
This year is the 100th anniversary of the Bear Mountain Bridge. In honor of this milestone, Hudson River Expeditions hosts a Bear Mountain Bridge kayaking tour on August 17 at 10 a.m. Kayakers will be guided through the southern gates of the Hudson Highlands region. The four-hour tour will land inside the mouth of Popolopen Creek to allow kayakers to refresh and refuel. Tickets for the tour cost $120 and are ideal for kayakers ages 14 and up, with previous kayaking experience required.
